RE: Pros/Cons of GM diesels
As I can only speak from my experience, my LLY has never overheated, and I run Colorado mtn. passes frequently. I have had the prev. mentioned injector harness problem, but was replaced under the 100k engine warrantee. Overall, I am very, very, did I say very?, pleased with the Duramax and the Allison behind it can't be beat IMO.
RE: 2008 Duramax ride
Best thing I did for the ride in my '04 3/4 ton was to pull the 245 tires off and go to a taller tire. Those little 245's felt like riding on a rock.
RE: Florida trip
Congrats on what sounded like a wonderful trip, and thanks for including your fuel costs. That was encouraging, as it sounds like you spent less on fuel than we did during a comparable length trip back around Memorial Day.
RE: Combining Camping with your other Hobbies....
We also like 4 wheeling the back country. The RV does let me extend the range of pistol matches I can attend, and is a plus that I can sleep in my own bed increasing how much rest I get at competitions.
RE: Need new tires for the TV
Discount tire direct does not show them....yep, you're right. I wonder if they are regional. Just googling Discount Tire, and using discounttire.com gives me an option of local stores which do stock them. If I have been in error here, I apologise.
RE: Tires for 'Burb 2500 - 245 or 265's?
Running 285/75/16E's on my sig pickup with no probs, and I like the ride much better with the taller tire than that little weasly 245. BTW, am running them on the stock aluminum skinny rim. DW won't let me spring for new rims.
RE: Sterling truck
According to a fellow camper around here who works for Frieghtliner, Sterling is a part of the Frieghtliner contract with Dodge/Chrysler, et al., and comes off the same assembly line in Mexico as the Dodge pickup.
RE: wash the dishes or paper plates?
If just DW and me camping we use corelle and silverware. With lots of family, paper plates are easier to deal with. However, my coffee mug is the constant, and don't touch it or wash it. Coffee won't taste right for 3 days if it gets washed. :B
RE: Need new tires for the TV
Just to throw another in the mix. For a couple years I used my TV for both a daily driver and towing, and off road veh, and and and. I am in the market for new tires and will replace with exactly what I did last time. Discount Tire's Pathfinder AT. I put 57k on this set, and really wasn't going to replace right now, but backing my 5er on an uphill in loose rock, I tore a chunk of tread out down to the steel belt. I am running 285/75/16E's and just got a quote at 744 bucks out the door. Just about what I paid for the last set. Low noise, great longevity, good grip in snow, ice, mud, rock, and stiff sidewall. I thought about the Michelins as my Dad is running them on his pickup, but not for the price point difference.
RE: Security & crime rates for CG and state parks?
Wow, long thread, so why not add my .02. In the dark ages, I wholesale'd SW arts and crafts so conceivably had a 100k or so of jewelry with me at any time on the road. Carried a gun, and kept a close eye on my surroundings. Skip to today, we have a treasure load of plastic plates, digital prints of animals on the walls of our 5er, and at least the DW has a good 0' gravity lounger and, my security precautions are about the same. I probably have forgotten more stuff at a CG than I have had stolen, ie. I have gifted many with water regulators left on the faucet, and none of you have thanked me for them. I tend to view CG's much the same as neighborhoods in the '60's. Everyone knows your name, or at least your rig, where your from, and have normally had some face 2 face time with each other. It's a little more difficult to get away with nefarious deeds under those circumstances than the anonymous suburbia of today. I have less security on my rig than I do on my person as the rig has better insurance, but other than my normal keeping an eye on my surroundings, nope, don't take any special precautions.
RE: "EMG/Nerve conduction test" - Ever had one???
Had one last year for a nerve entrapment in elbow. Like the other posters. Some spots weren't too bad. Back of my neck did smart, but like a lot of things, the anticipation was worse than the testing.
RE: I Like Ike - Not
Congrats on good planning. BIL in Spring finally broke down and bought a gennie for the stick house but didn't plan on time to have it wired in. hehehe, never liked him anyway.
RE: Reese Remote Slider Actuator
Ditto. I believe the actuator is just to lock or unlock the slider. Saves 2 trips from cab to bed unlocking and locking. I don't have one yet, but am very interested.
RE: What have you replaced your little used banket with?
Honest to goodness, I read blankey in the OP. Glad I read the whole thread before responding. If there are no structural issues (and my plan in our 5er) would be to jerk the dinette out and replace with table/chairs. I love the computer desk setup, but for our purposes a folding wood TV table does the jorb to hold a laptop.
RE: Opinions wanted - 08 GMC 6L Gas
Had an '02 with the 6L and actually didn't like it as much as my previous 350ci. No more power, and worse fuel mileage. I know you said you weren't going to pull very often, but what I balanced was 14mpg empty, 6mpg towing with the 6L against my current diesel 19mpg empty, 12mpg pulling. However, yes, we pull in the Colorado mountains mostly, and I love the Duramax uphill and the Allison downhill. Run numbers for yourself, and make the decision that works with your plans. Best of luck.
RE: Have you ever
Bear absconded with the last of a jar of peanuts meant for the chipmunks last year. I let the chipmunks deal with him. Other than that, nada.
RE: Safety of my Family
One of our favorite CG's is frequented by black bears. We just do the usual, no food left out, if hiking we take care to make a little noise to warn them we are coming, and any late night excursions out of the trailer are begun with a flashlighted look at the surroundings.
BTW, I CCW, and am a USPSA classified shooter, but always consider prevention and avoidance as the best tactic.
